HENCEFORTH, all dissertations and theses for postgraduate students in the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State will be subjected to software analysis, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, has announced. Ekpo stated this while addressing postgraduate students of the institution during the orientation exercise at the town campus of the university, saying that the measure was necessary to check incessant cases of plagiarism among postgraduate students during research.
“The management of the University of Uyo will henceforth subject every Dissertation and Thesis for Master’s and Doctorates respectively to software analysis.
“This comes from observation that some research students of the institution under the guise of researching merely lift existing works to facilitate the programme, hence contributing nothing to existing knowledge, which is the primary objective of the research programme,” she explained.
She noted that most discoveries that led to developments in various fields of human endeavours the world over came from painstaking academic research, hence the need for students reaching out for certificates associated with such to be committed to excellence.
Prof Ekpo, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Okon Ansa, disclosed that a PhD. Thesis from the University of Uyo was among the first 10 in the country in terms of rating, and therefore called on research students to emulate such diligence and hard work.
Addressing the 2013/2014 research students, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Joseph Obinaju, restated the institution’s commitment to ensuring graduation on record time. He, however, noted that student’s ability to graduate largely depends on such individual’s commitment to the programme.
