This programme may be due to the fallout of poor UTME performance for this year, and many youngsters are at a cross road on what next for their academic future.
This piece therefore is an unbiased review of the difference between predegree( also known in some quarters as remedial) and Basic Studies programmes (JUPEB).An understanding of the differences and similarities between the Basic studies and pre-Degree Programmes which runs in the University of Uyo would be very helpful in determining which way a prospective candidate should go as the quest for admission into the school this year.
In a nut shell, Pre-Degree programme in the University of Uyo is for Jamb candidates who wish to undergo a one year programme in the school which does not necessarily mean that they have been admitted. Such candidates must have scored up to 150 points in JAMB 2015. On completion of this programme, The programme runs from Eight to twelve months programme an candidates must have a complete o’level or WASSCE/NECO result before applying for the programme. And at the completion of the programme, the candidates (now semi-students) would take an examination, which when successful would usher them into 100level in the programmes they did during Pre-Degree. The result will be accepted by the University Of Uyo alone. The Result expires normally after 1 year and Candidates must know that the lectures are revision of o’level topics thus adds little to the students’ preparedness for university education.
On the other hand, Candidates who go for Basic studies programme in the University of Uyo Should also note that Its a fixed nine months programme and at the completion of the programme candidates will be offered admission to 200L (year 2) and It doesn’t require UTME before final admission as admission is by direct entry(DE) . Candidates may use an incomplete o’level and awaiting result. The JUBEP certificate is accepted by 75% of all Nigerian universities. It is also accepted for all courses including medicine, law and engineering. The Result expires after fifteen(15) years and Another ‘Good news’ is that Lectures are A level, thus it prepares student for university education. Candidates applying for this programme must have taken the JAMB UTME 2015.
This Basic Studies Programme is actually designed to prepare students for examinations conducted by the consortium of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board(JUPEB)
As you can see, none of these programmes directly offer you admission into the school this year. Instead they prepare you for qualifying exams which may offer you admission later on into either 100level or 200level programmes in the school depending on what you go for. As you must have known, only registration for these programmes costs N15,000 each. That is to tell you what will be involved in the long run. Post utme and DE will cost lesser. Can you see the difference? Don’t worry if you have the cash.
